Could ?Watched On? Facebook News Feed Stories Save Netflix?

Facebook Netflix News Feed Story FinAfter a disastrous Q3 2011, Netflix stands to replace some of the 800,000 subscribers it lost. It's savior? The Facebook news feed. Earlier this month, the House of Representatives passed a revised bill to change the Video Privacy Protection Act of 1988 to allow people to opt in to having their movie rental activity shared. This Act had delayed the Netflix Facebook app's?launch in the US. Now the Facebook news feed is beginning to show "Josh Constine watched The Walking Dead on Netflix" stories that point back to the Netflix site. After being enticed by something a friend has watched, Facebook users might sign up and pay on Netflix.com so they can watch too.

(AP) ? Vietnam may block its citizens from using Facebook, but that didn't stop website founder Mark Zuckerberg from vacationing in the communist country.

Zuckerberg spent Christmas Eve in the popular tourist destination Ha Long Bay, local official Trinh Dang Thanh says.

State-run media say Zuckerberg arrived in Vietnam on Dec. 22.

Zuckerberg spent Christmas Day at an ecolodge in the northern mountain town of Sapa and rode a buffalo, said Le Phuc Thien, deputy manager at Topas Ecolodge.

Zuckerberg, Facebook's 27-year-old CEO, founded the social networking site in 2004.

Vietnam's aggressive Internet censors block access to Facebook and other websites, but young Vietnamese easily bypass the restrictions.

Samsung Repp (U.S. Cellular)

Picking up where the Samsung Gem (2.5 stars) left off, the Samsung Repp reps budget-priced, entry-level Android smartphones?for U.S. Cellular. With the classic LG Optimus U?(4 stars) now off the market, it's a good option, but you can still do better without having to spend a dime.

Design, Call Quality, and Apps
The Repp measures 4.4 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs just 3.7 ounces. It's lightweight and comfortable to hold, and looks significantly nicer than the angular Gem. Made entirely of plastic, the textured back panel of the phone is a "wine red" color, with a silver band separating it from more red detail on the front. The 3.2-inch plastic capacitive touch screen offers 320-by-480-pixel resolution. That's standard for low-end smartphones, and while it's usually not a problem, colors here look washed out and there's a pervasive, unpleasant stippling effect. Typing on the Repp's Swype keyboard felt a bit cramped, due to the small screen size. There are three function keys below the display, instead of the usual four. Two of them are touch keys, while the home key is a physical button.

The Samsung Repp is a dual-band EV-DO Rev 0 (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. The Repp will hit 3G data speeds on U.S. Cellular, but it will be slightly slower than some other 3G phones, like the Samsung Mesmerize?(Free, 4.5 stars), which use the faster EVDO Rev A technology. It can also function as a mobile hotspot with the appropriate data plan.

Reception was fine and voice quality was good overall, a significant step up from the Gem. Voices sound clear and easy to understand in the earpiece, if just a touch thready. Calls made with the phone are equally clear, with good background noise reduction, though I noticed a slight ringing sound on occasion. The speakerphone sounds good and is just loud enough to use outdoors. Calls also sounded fine through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and voice dialing worked over Bluetooth without training. Battery life was good at 7 hours, 43 minutes of talk time.

OS and Apps
The Repp runs Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). There's no word on whether it will receive an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), but we wouldn't hold out hope. Like the Gem, the version of Android running here is virtually?stock; there are no Samsung TouchWiz-like enhancements to be found. There are five customizable home screens you can swipe between, which come preloaded with a number of useful apps and widgets, along with some bloatware. Thankfully, though, the Repp isn't saddled with much more bloatware than the typical Android device, and what's there doesn't seem to slow things down.

Everything is powered by an 800MHz Qualcomm S1 processor. It's not blazing fast, but it gets the job done for most common tasks. The Repp benchmarked similarly to other lower-end Android phones.

App-wise, you get Google Maps Navigation for free voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS directions, and a bit of bloatware from U.S. Cellular. You should also be able to run most of the 250,000+ third-party apps in the Android Market.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
There's a side-mounted microSD card slot on the left side of the phone, which is a plus. Samsung includes a 2GB card; my 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine as well. Music tracks sounded clear through both wired earbuds as well as Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars). I was able to listen to AAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, and WMA test files, but not FLAC. Standalone MP4 and 3GP videos played back at resolutions up to 800-by-480, and audio was fine over Bluetooth.

The 3.2-megapixel camera has no auto-focus or flash. Shutter speeds are fast, but test photos leave much to be desired. Photos taken with the camera look dark, washed out, and a bit blurry. Recorded 320-by-240-pixel videos play back at 15 frames per second; they look smooth, but they're also not much larger than a postage stamp.

Despite its weak screen and camera, the Samsung Repp is a decent entry-level Android phone for U.S. Cellular. But you can do a lot better without having to spend any money. Our previous Editors' Choice, the Samsung Mesmerize, is now free, too. It runs the same major version of Android as the Repp does, and it's powered by a faster processor, has a better camera and a much nicer display. If you're willing to spend some extra money, our current Editors' Choice, the Motorola Electrify?($99.99, 4.5 stars) will set you back 100 bucks, but you'll get an ultra fast dual-core processor, beautiful display, and the ability to convert your phone into a laptop PC with the proper accessories.

Benchmarks
Continuous talk time: 7 hours 43 minutes

Can Struggling Hollywood Ride Broadway's Coattails? | Reuters

www.reuters.com:

With the motion picture box office in a slump, and Broadway on an upswing, an increasing number of film franchises are being transformed for the stage.

In fact, theatrical productions of feature films including "The Notebook," "Rocky," "Austin Powers," "Ghost," "Finding Neverland," "Once," "Diner" and "The Goonies" are all in the works. It's easy to see why.

Domestic box office attendance is at its lowest level in 16 years, and studios have struggled to fill seats throughout a sluggish 2011, during which ticket sales are down around 5 percent.

Ohio High School, College Instructors To Co-Teach

By: Associated Press | NBC4i.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Some high school instructors in one of Ohio's largest districts will begin jointly teaching students with college professors in an effort to get more teenagers ready for college.

Columbus Superintendent Gene Harris tells The Columbus Dispatch the goal is to cut the number of high school graduates who don't finish college because they're unprepared. Teachers from three schools will start working with professors from Columbus State Community College, DeVry University and Ohio State University in January.

They'll focus on English and math classes for sophomores and juniors. It may help them avoid the expense of remedial classes that don't count toward a degree.

The Ohio Board of Regents says about 41 percent of the state's public high school graduates take a remedial course when enrolling at an Ohio college.

Android Central

The Dell Streak 7 may never have been the most popular tablet ever released, and it may also be discontinued officially. That doesn't stop British retailer Currys shipping them right now for an online only price of £99.97

The listing still shows the Streak as shipping with Froyo, but Dell began rolling out Honeycomb for the device a couple of months back. At the £100 price point we're in impulse buy territory, so if you want one hit the source link below. They might not be about for long.

Could Public Health Benefits Make Combating Climate Change Free?

2003-europe-temperature-anomalyHEAT WAVE: Extreme weather, like the deadly heat wave in Europe in 2003, will create some of the public health impacts expected from climate change. Image: Courtesy of NASA

DURBAN, South Africa?Former entomologist Diarmid Campbell-Lendrum of the World Health Organization worries about nosebleeds more than the average person. That's because he's one of the estimated 12 million people worldwide afflicted with leishmaniasis?a potentially fatal parasitic disease characterized most often by lesions on the skin and/or mucus membranes?caused by the bite of a sandfly.

As the team leader for climate change and health at WHO and an environmental epidemiologist, Campbell-Lendrum is also in a position to worry more about how global warming is going to affect such so-called vector-borne diseases. "Is climate change going to bring malaria back to the U.S. and Europe? It's not," he asserts. "Climate change is eroding the environmental determinants of health: water, food, increasing disease," he says. Already WHO research suggests that current warming of global average temperatures of just under one degree Celsius is responsible for an additional 150,000 deaths per year, largely due to agricultural failures and diarrheal disease in developing countries. "All the inputs are on the conservative side," says Campbell-Lendrum, who helped come up with the number.

As a result, WHO?and a consortium of other public health organizations?declared climate change to be among the most pressing emerging health issues in the world at the recent climate negotiations here in South Africa. Consider some of the changes that are already taking place: extreme heat waves, such as the one in Europe in 2003 that killed 46,000 people; changes in bacterial diseases due to water contamination and a quickening of bacterial growth rates in warmer temperatures; worsening levels of ground-level ozone, otherwise known as smog, which is responsible for worsening asthma and heart attacks (among other health effects); changes in pollen making allergies worse; changes in vector-borne diseases; as well as droughts, floods and other forms of extreme weather such as the 12 natural disasters in the U.S. this year that caused at least $1 billion in damage.

"Those things are with us now," says Dr. Hugh Montgomery of the U.K. Climate and Health Council, one of the groups calling for action to combat climate change?and to consider public health when doing so. "If we continue this script, we are writing a death certificate for humanity on our planet."

Taking public health into account would help in more ways than one. Climate change?fighting measures such as extending modern electricity to those who now burn wood, coal or dung indoors (thereby shortening their lives as well as contributing to global warming) would likely save as much money or more in public health costs as the price of implementing the new technologies. The alternative is to potentially see a reversal in the dramatic gains in the past century of public health of in some parts of the world. "Just as the HIV epidemic caused us to have a reversal in recent gains in public health in this country," notes Dr. Rajen Naidoo of the Nelson Mandela Medical School in Durban, "so too does climate change now."

In fact, something as simple as adding a solar hot-water heater to the roof of a village school can cut down on diarrheal disease in a country like South Africa. The hot water allows better hand-washing and thus better hygiene. Outfitting health clinics to cope with the various increased risks caused by climate change would also help, as would investments in climate-resilient infrastructure, such as better water-treatment facilities.

No. 23 North Carolina women beat E. Carolina 65-61 (AP)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. ? Chay Shegog scored 19 points and Krista Goss had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 23 North Carolina to a 65-61 win over East Carolina on Tuesday night.

The Tar Heels (8-2) used their size to pull out the win. They twice got rebounds after missing free throws in the final 23 seconds, keeping the Pirates (6-4) from beating a Top 25 team for the first time in four years.

North Carolina survived another low-scoring night. They came into their two games in Myrtle Beach leading the nation at 87.5 points a game, but scored just 48 in a loss to South Carolina on Sunday.

Chareya Smith led East Carolina with 14 points, while Tatiana Chapple added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Communications Officer - Reproductive Health | Jobs.euractiv.com ...

Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition - 22 December 2011

Job Description

The Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition is a global partnership of over 160 public, private, and non-governmental organizations dedicated to ensuring that all people in low- and middle-income countries can choose, obtain, and use affordable, high-quality supplies and related services to ensure their better reproductive health. Our small Brussels-based Secretariat is managed by PATH, an international, nonprofit organization that creates sustainable, culturally relevant solutions, enabling communities worldwide to break longstanding cycles of poor health. The Secretariat also includes staff based at PATH?s offices in Washington, DC and Seattle.

Since the establishment of the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition Secretariat in 2006, our communication needs have grown exponentially. In addition to maintaining a large website and monthly newsletter, we are engaged in social media, broad-based advocacy, press relations, and public speaking engagements. We also host and manage a series of listserves, databases, and online inventories of key Coalition activities.

The Secretariat is seeking an experienced Communications Officer with the skills, enthusiasm and initiative to manage this diverse communications program. Drawing on his/her own abilities and those of other staff, the Communications Officer will translate into action a new communications strategy, which he/she will help to develop. This will mean delivering key communications outputs such as copy for the website, newsletter and social media outlets. It will mean keeping abreast of and understanding the technical content of the Coalition?s work; and it will mean communicating that content effectively, accurately, and in ways that meet the needs of different audiences. Finally, it will mean managing and backstopping, if necessary, the various partners on whom the Coalition?s communication output relies: web manager, graphics designers, translators, and relevant Secretariat staff.

The Communications Officer will be a full-time mid-level post, ideally based in the Secretariat?s Brussels office. Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordinate the formulation of a new communications strategy which will define the Coalition?s communications work over the period 2012-2015 and possibly beyond.
  • Develop, strengthen or sustain internal systems and structures necessary to effectively implement the strategy.
  • Work with Coalition partners in identifying opportunities for effective communications and advocacy.
  • Oversee quality assurance of all communications products.
  • Manage the engagement of Secretariat staff in preparing key communication materials.
  • Manage and prepare copy for the Coalition website, monthly newsletter and social media channels.
  • Routinely upload both text and graphics to the Coalition website.
  • Develop presentations, speeches, and simple graphics for use by Secretariat staff and Coalition representatives.
  • Draft and place op-eds.
  • Ensure communications are up to date, relevant, and cohesive.

Required Skills
The Communications Officer must have broad-based experience in the communications field, possess solid writing skills, and demonstrate familiarity with all the components of effective advocacy communications (copywriting, design, creative technology, press, etc.). More specific requirements include:

  • Native English speaker or near native fluency
  • Excellent, proven English writing skills
  • Solid experience in electronic media, including social media
  • Demonstrated management skills
  • Proven capacity to think and work strategically
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to build partnerships across organizations and geographic locations
  • Independent working and problem solving skills, and a track record of taking initiative and thinking outside the box
  • Flexibility to work in a dynamic, culturally diverse environment
  • An eye for visual design and layout (for both print and electronic media), and basic knowledge of graphics software (Photoshop) desirable.
  • Knowledge of French desirable

Required Experience
University degree in communications or equivalent along with a minimum of five years of experience in communications, including social media and media relations and three years of experience managing a diverse communications portfolio. Experience working for networks/coalitions and global health issues preferred.

By: The Associated Press

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico senior Phillip McDonald, who has been hampered all season with injuries, came off the bench to score 18 points in Thursday's 87-62 defeat of Missouri-Kansas City.

Drew Gordon joined McDonald with 18 points as the Lobos (10-2) won their eighth straight game.

UMKC's Reggie Chamberlain scored 12 to lead the Kangaroos (7-7).

New Mexico opened up a close game midway through the first half with a 15-2 run as Jamal Fenton collected six of those points on two lay ups and a short jumper, pushing its lead to 25-11.

McDonald scored 11 straight points in a two-minute stretch late in the first half, helping New Mexico take a 40-24 lead at halftime.

'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood in car accident

Things started to look up for "Teen Mom's" Amber Portwood when Indiana's Child Protection Services had closed its investigation on whether or not the reality star was a fit mother, but quickly afterwards, things turned sour.

Yesterday, Portwood was faced with the possibility of going to jail after violating her probation, and now, Leah's mom is dealing with the consequences of rear-ending a man's vehicle in Indiana.

Sigh.

MORE: Portwood: "I've Been Diagnosed With Extreme Bipolar and Disassociative Disorder"

E! News learns that the accident happened yesterday at 8:08 p.m. in Anderson, Ind. Portwood was at fault for following the 2003 Saturn S12 car too closely, which resulted in hitting the car with her 2005 Cadillac STS when the other driver decided to suddenly brake.

The report estimates the damages to the man's car to be up to $2,500.

Report: 'Teen Mom' Amber violated probation

She claimed that "the car in front of her slammed on her breaks and suddenly made a turn," also saying that the other person didn't use a signal, although he says he did.

"This guy slammed on his brakes in front of me when I was on my way to see my mom. It barely scratched the car though," Portwood tells E! News. "I wasn't even going the full speed limit. I was slowing down and boom, he slammed on his brakes. I guess they missed their turn and stopped real fast to turn. It sucks."

Judge: MCSO must pay Republic's legal fees

Dec. 16, 2011 08:01 PM
The Arizona Republic

A judge this month ordered the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to pay The Arizona Republic and KPNX 12 News nearly $51,000 for its legal fees in obtaining public records.

The Sheriff's Office says it will appeal.

The newspaper and TV station in April filed public-records requests to obtain an investigative report from Arpaio's office.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office conducted a six-month investigation into allegations of mismanagement and retaliation against employees within the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The allegations were contained in an internal memo authored by a whistleblower inside the department.

That investigation also found that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office failed to adequately investigate more than 400 sex-crime cases, including dozens in El Mirage, over a two-year period because of poor oversight and because former Chief Deputy David Hendershott hoped to protect a key investigator from bad publicity.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office initially refused to release any records from the report and declined to specify when records could be disclosed. Sheriff Joe Arpaio's refusal prompted a lawsuit by the newspaper and TV station.

After the lawsuit was filed -- and after Hendershott and Deputy Chief Larry Black resigned in the wake of the investigation's findings -- the Sheriff's Office began to release parts of the report.

However, portions of the report relating to the conduct of Capt. Joel Fox were not released, with the office citing confidentiality statutes designed to keep certain information under seal while employees remained under investigatation, as Fox was at the time. Fox was fired and he filed an administrative appeal, but the office continued to withhold records relating to his conduct.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Judge Buttrick ruled in favor of the media partners, ordering the Sheriff's Office to release records relating to Fox after he filed an $8 million notice of claim against the state and Maricopa County.

On Dec. 1, Buttrick ruled that the Sheriff's Office must pay $50,565 to the media partners.

"The court's award recognizes the public's right to prompt access to public records, especially a report involving allegations of high-level corruption inside the Sheriff's Office," said David Bodney, an attorney who represented The Republic and 12 News.

Tom Liddy, an attorney for Arpaio, said The Republic and 12 News are not entitled to attorney fees because the records were released to the public as soon as the law permitted.

"The sheriff clearly recognizes and applauds the public's right to know," Liddy said.

Whitecaps acquire Nguyen in MLS weighted lottery

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:37 p.m. ET Dec. 15, 2011

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired attacking midfielder Lee Nguyen through Major League Soccer's weighted lottery.

The 25-year-old from McKinney, Texas, signed a multi-year contract with MLS on Dec. 6. Nguyen was entered into the weighted lottery after he had turned down a MLS contract when he was drafted in college. He played a season of college soccer at Indiana before joining the Netherlands' PSV Eindhoven for the 2005-06 season.

The Whitecaps were one of six MLS clubs to participate in Thursday's draw for Nguyen. Vancouver was selected ahead of FC Dallas, the Houston Dynamo, the Los Angeles Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC. Each team's record dictates its probability of winning the draw.

HBT: Indians interested in Lopez

Cleveland has had ?serious discussions? with free agent Jose Lopez, according to Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com.

Once upon a time Lopez was a promising young infielder, but he?s hit just .233 with a .263 on-base percentage and .348 slugging percentage in 232 games during the past two seasons and was let go for nothing by both the Rockies and Marlins this year.

He?s still just 28 years old and could be useful as a right-handed-hitting platoon partner for left-handed-hitting third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall, but Lopez has fallen a long way since his All-Star days and might be available on a minor-league contract.

Google donates $11.5 million to the fight against modern slavery | ZDNet

It would be nice if Google donated to the sex worker rights groups (of which there are many nationally and internationally with 501 (c) 3 status) which are also fighting against human trafficking in ALL its forms, and also fighting against the conflation of sex work and sex trafficking which so harms those whom society views as 'victims.'

From our perspective, Google's support of JUST those prohibitionists posing as anti-human trafficking organizations is as though it was supporting the anti- gay/lesbian/transgendered groups of yesteryear when those groups were promoting the bigotry and ignorance which claimed all gays were pedophiles, all lesbians were made that way by child sexual abuse and transgendered persons and gays could be 'cured' by a good dose of heterosexual love.

Clearly there is another side to the issue of prostitution vs. sex trafficking, but unfortunately we are out financed by those whose disdain for consenting adult commercial sex have confused the issue of true trafficking and consenting adult sexual activity.

No one wants to abolish all human trafficking more than sex worker activists. It will no more happen by abolishing all sex work than it would by abolishing all domestic servitude, agriculture, garment manufacturing or any of the other areas of labor into which millions of people are trafficked every year.

Because we know how to spot true victims of sex slavery and we are willing to turn in those who use force or abuse us, we are the ones who ought to be funded so that we can in fact fight for our rights and the rights of those who are victims.

A government that cannot tell the difference between a consenting adult who chooses to engage in commercial sex and someone who is a victim of ANY form of human trafficking is not a government that can really solve the problem of human trafficking, anymore than it could help victims of rape or pedophilia if it was unable to distinguish between victims of rape, child sexual abuse and those who engaged in NON commercial consenting adult sex.
