Not much has come easily for C. Vivian Stringer during her Hall of Fame coaching career.

So it was fitting that it took her five tries to become the fourth women's basketball coach to have 900 victories. She finally reached the milestone Tuesday night with Rutgers' 68-56 win over South Florida.

"When I look back on my life, this team, probably this year, best reflects what 900 has been," she said. "It helped me to remember that it was never easy. But unless you really have a passion, unless you really know how fortunate you are not to have had a lot of major injuries to a lot of players, which is what happened to this team, and unless you remember how fortunate you are to be able to get to those special places."

Stringer joined Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt and Sylvia Hatchell in the exclusive club. Maybe a half dozen more women's coaches might gain entrance over the next few years. Only three Division I men's coaches have reached 900 victories: Mike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight and Jim Boeheim.

"I am fortunate to call Vivian my friend and could not be happier that she has reached the 900-win milestone in her career. I have great respect and admiration for Vivian and consider her one of the great pioneers of our game," Summitt said in a statement. "She has had an incredible journey, and I hope she adds many more to her 'W' column!"

Stringer, who was the first coach in men's or women's basketball to take three different schools to the Final Four ? including Rutgers in 2000 and '07 ? fought back tears as her team celebrated their coach's achievement.

"I think it's beyond words," said Stringer, whose record stands at 900-330 in 42 seasons. "I'm happy that it's over. I can hardly breathe. It's over and now I can just coach and smile, and get back to what I love to do because it's never been about numbers."

During the four-game losing streak, Stringer admitted she was tired of talking about when she'd get No. 900. She was getting worn out by it, even snapping at reporters during a media session.

Her demeanor changed after a loss to St. John's on Saturday, the game before Tuesday's landmark victory. Stringer said she received a call from Hatchell, who reached 900 wins on Feb. 7.

The longtime friends talked about the pressures their players faced while trying to get that 900th win. It took Hatchell's team two tries to get her that victory.

"She is probably one of the few people I would talk to about it," Stringer said, "and she was just saying it was highly stressful for her, too. Finally when they were over it, (the players) were much better because they were really uptight."

With the weight of the milestone lifted, Stringer can only hope her team will use it as a springboard for the rest of the season. Stringer, in her 18th season at Rutgers, has been focused on making an 11th-straight trip to the NCAA tournament. Beating a surging South Florida team will definitely help the Scarlet Knights' resume.

"Everything will take care of itself," Stringer said, dismissing a question related to her team's postseason fate. "This was a major win, and it's important to win down the (stretch) as it is right now."

The Scarlet Knights (15-12, 6-8 Big East), who are 10th in the conference, finish off the regular season against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh ? two of the bottom teams in the league.

As the game ended, a crowd of 1,304 at the Rutgers Athletic Center saluted Stringer with chants of "900" and "C-V-S" and Scarlet Knights athletic director Tim Pernetti was among the first to greet her with a framed No. 900 jersey. Rutgers' cheerleaders unfurled a banner that read "Congratulations Coach Stringer - 900 wins," and her players took turns hugging their emotional coach at midcourt.

"If it's something special for all the generations of players and coaches that I've been a part of, then, yeah, I'm happy," she said. "But I'm looking forward to more."

Rutgers had lost four straight games since beating Cincinnati for Stringer's 899th career victory.

"It's more than a game, it's about a preparation for life," said Stringer, who is in her 18th season at Rutgers. "It's about understanding that when things are rough you may get knocked down and there may be doubters but you'll still rise."

Senior guard Erica Wheeler scored 24 points to lead Rutgers.

"It's almost a little heartbreaking because she gives her heart out when she coaches," Wheeler said. "So to not get her that 900th win as soon as we needed to, I cried a couple times at night. It was important tonight to definitely get her that win."

Court Sides with VirnetX on Daily Damages Award of $330,201, Orders Parties to Negotiate an Ongoing Royalty Agreement within 45 days

ZEPHYR COVE, Nevada.,? February 27, 2013 ? VirnetX? Holding Corporation (NYSE MKT: VHC), an Internet security software and technology company, announced today that on February 26, 2013, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division, issued its Memorandum Opinion and Order (?Order?) regarding post-trial motions resulting from the prior $368 million jury verdict (?Verdict?) for VirnetX in the ongoing patent infringement action between VirnetX Inc. (?VirnetX?) and Apple Inc. (?Apple?).

In the Order, the Court denied Apple?s motion to reduce the damages awarded by the jury for past infringement.? Tesco to source more meat in Britain

BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - Tesco, the world's third-largest retailer, said it would buy more meat from its home market in Britain and shorten supply chains after the discovery of horsemeat in beef products shook consumer confidence in supermarket sourcing.

Tesco, Britain's biggest retailer, was one of the first grocers to be hit by the horsemeat scandal, which has prompted European governments to demand tougher rules on the sourcing and labelling of meat products.

"Where it's reasonable to do so, we will source from British producers," Tesco Chief Executive Philip Clarke told farmers at the National Farmers Union conference in Birmingham, central England on Wednesday.

Clarke said Tesco would seek more partnerships with British farmers and that from July all fresh chicken sold at Tesco's stores in the United Kingdom would come from British farms.

"We'll move over time to ensure that all of our chicken in all of our products, fresh or frozen, is from the British Isles," he said.

The discovery of horsemeat in some beef products sold by Tesco led to criticism from Prime Minister David Cameron and knocked 480 million pounds off its market value on January 16.

Tesco's shares have risen since then, but British supermarkets are trying to reassure rattled consumers that meat products are properly labelled and clearly sourced.

Clarke, who started his career stacking shelves at Tesco, responded to the scandal with a more stringent product testing regime and a pledge to offer customers insight into Tesco's global supply chain.

"We are going to examine all aspects of our supply chain. We'll look at the processes that we use and make sure we can be totally confident in how our products are being sourced," he told farmers.

Clarke said the retailer would establish an independent panel of experts to advise on its supply chain, which would need to be shortened and simplified.

Livestock specialists say that ensuring a chain of quality from farm to table will cost money - particularly at the cheaper, ready-made meal end.

"It does not follow that the measures I am announcing today mean that food needs to become more expensive," Clarke said, contradicting comments he made earlier in the day, when he told BBC's Today radio programme that he hoped but could not promise there would be no price increases.

Clarke had said in a February 21 statement that raising standards "doesn't mean more expensive food".

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said British suppliers should seize on increased demand for top-quality British products that pass through "rigorous traceability systems".

"This is a fantastic opportunity for British farmers to show their products to the British consumer, because the British consumer has had a horrible shock in recent weeks. There is a clear fraud in the horsemeat scandal," Paterson said.

Farmer Mark Leggott said the beef industry's reputation had suffered from decades of health scares including foot and mouth disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

But Leggott, who has 25 years of experience on his farm in the eastern English county of Lincolnshire, said the beef industry had stabilised and could be bolstered by a renewed focus on British produce in the wake of the horsemeat scandal.

"We've already jumped through the hoops in this country. We can just go and fill that capacity straight away; we fulfil the criteria already in terms of traceability and provenance," Leggott said in an interview.

Wall Street rallies on growth optimism

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose on Monday, suggesting the equity rally was intact as investors grew more confident that the global economy would continue to grow.

Stocks have been strong performers so far this year, with the S&P 500 jumping 6.2 percent in 2013 to hover around its highest levels since 2007. That has prompted many to call for a pullback, though recently any dip has been used as a buying opportunity.

While the S&P fell last week, the decline was a slight 0.3 percent and was the first weekly drop after a seven-week string of gains.

"The major trend is that indexes will keep moving higher, a reflection that the economy continues to grow at a moderate pace," said Bernard Baumohl, managing director at the Economic Outlook Group in Princeton, New Jersey.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 45.78 points, or 0.33 percent, at 14,046.35. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 6.90 points, or 0.46 percent, at 1,522.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 16.87 points, or 0.53 percent, at 3,178.69.

Equities will face a test with the looming debate over sequestration, massive U.S. government budget cuts that will take effect on Friday if lawmakers fail to reach an agreement over spending and taxes. The White House issued warnings about the harm the cuts are likely to inflict on the economy if enacted.

Early results from Italy's general election cheered markets there after the pro-reform, center-left Democratic Party was leading Silvio Berlusconi's conservative bloc. [ID:nL6N0BPFBQ] Investors worried if the elections went the wrong way, efforts to handle Italy's debt problems would be undermined.

"Odds are that there will be a coalition government that will let the austerity measures stay in place, allowing yields to come down and avoiding what would have been a headwind for U.S. markets," said Baumohl.

European shares <.fteu3> rose 0.4 percent while Italy's main FTSE MIB <.ftmib> soared 3.5 percent.

The Nasdaq was lifted by a rallies at SanDisk Corp , which jumped 2.7 percent to $50.81, and Amgen Inc , up 3.8 percent to $90.16.

Barnes & Noble Inc climbed 7.8 percent to $14.56 after the Wall Street Journal reported that Chairman Leonard Riggio was considering a bid for the company's bookstore business.

Lowe's Cos Inc reported earnings that beat expectations, helped by rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Sandy in the United States. After climbing in premarket, shares dipped 0.7 percent to $37.42.

With 83 percent of the S&P 500 having reported results, 69 percent of beat profit expectations, compared with a 62 percent average since 1994 and 65 percent over the past four quarters, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Fourth-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies are estimated to have risen 6 percent, according to the data, above a 1.9 percent forecast at the start of the earnings season.

Dynavax Technologies Inc shares plunged 34 percent to $1.96 after the Food and Drug Administration denied approval for the company's adult hepatitis B vaccine and sought additional data for evaluate its safety.

Gaming Bill Passes Indiana Senate | News - Indiana Public Media

Indiana?s gaming industry would get help from the state under legislation passed by the Senate on Monday.

The Senate-approved legislation would allow live table games in racinos, allow riverboats to move their facilities on land and reduce the amount of gaming revenues going to local communities.? The state would then use that money for tax credits for the casinos.

But Senator Earline Rogers (D-Gary) says that plan hurts communities that are already suffering.

?I think it?s unfair.? I think the state is reneging on a deal,? he says.

But Phil Boots (R-Crawfordsville) says Indiana?s casinos need help as they face competition from all the surrounding states.

?We can lose, or expect to lose anywhere from $60 million to $100 million a year in revenue to the state of Indiana just by doing nothing,? he says.

Boots pledged to continue working on the bill as it moves through the legislative process. The bill passed 32 to 18 and heads to the House.

A couple of years ago, when the massive and amazing all-in-one scienceblogging.org was launching, the organizers asked if I thought there were enough artists blogging about science-related artwork to make an RSS feed that would update a few times a day or week, that could collect science-based artists under one roof. I said sure, and launched the Science Artists Feed.

It?s a couple of years on, and I?m happy to say the Science Artists Feed has grown to over 170 blogs, and updates with tremendous speed. ?In the past, I?ve highlighted posts that caught my eye in the Scumble series of posts. The Feed became a great way for me and others to keep our eyes on what was happening in the most innovative rapidly-changing field of art today.

Times change. RSS feeds still play a vital role. But communication and engagement have largely moved around.

Group blogs and blogs featuring science-based art ? blogs like ART Evolved, Mad Art Lab, Street Anatomy, SONSI, here on Symbiartic and many more ? keep changing and growing while featuring a bewildering array of artists. Artists on the cutting edge of our understanding of everything from dinosaurs to microbes to nebulae.

I have been dissatisfied with the Science Artists Feed for a while. While I think it?s useful, and it?s amazing that each month I still receive a couple of requests to join, it really wasn?t a community. So last December, we at Symbiartic started the Google+ SciArt Circle Community.

Mediterranean diet helps cut risk of heart attack, stroke: Results of PREDIMED study presented

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Results of the PREDIMED study, aimed at assessing the efficacy of the Mediterranean diet in the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, have been published in The New England Journal of Medicine. They show that the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or tree nuts reduces by 30 percent the risk of suffering a cardiovascular death, a myocardial infarction or a stroke.

The study has been coordinated by the researcher Ramon Estruch, from the Faculty of Medicine of the UB and the Hospital Cl?nic -- affiliated centres with the health campus of the UB, HUBc -- and has had the collaboration of the professor Rosa M. Lamuela and her team from the Natural Antioxidant Research Group of the Faculty of Pharmacy -- located at the campus of international excellence BKC -- which determined the biomarkers of Mediterranean diet consumption.

The research is part of the project PREDIMED, a multicentre trial carried out between 2003 and 2011 to study the effects of the Mediterranean diet on the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The study was funded by the Carlos III Health Institute by means of the cooperative research thematic network (RETIC RD06/0045) and the CIBER of Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn).

A total of 7,447 people following major cardiovascular risk factors participated in the study. They were divided into three dietary intervention groups: a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts), and a low-fat diet (animal and vegetable). A dietician visited the patients every three months and they attended dietary training group sessions, in which they received detailed information about the Mediterranean and the low-fat diet, and the food included in each one. Moreover, they were provided with shopping lists, menus and recipes adapted to each type of diet and each season of the year.

During the study, those participants who followed any of the two types of Mediterranean diet received freely extra-virgin olive oil (one litre per week), and nuts (30 grams per day; 15 grams of walnuts, 7.5 grams of almonds and 7.5 grams of hazelnuts).

After five years, it has been proved that participants who followed any of the two types of Mediterranean diet showed a substantial reduction in the risk of suffering a cardiovascular death, a myocardial infarction or a stroke.

According to the researchers, the results of PREDIMED study are relevant as they prove that a high-vegetable fat diet is healthier at a cardiovascular level than a low-fat diet. The authors state that the study has been controversial as it provides new data to reject the idea that it is necessary to reduce fats in order to improve cardiovascular health.

Hopefully, these results will provide new references to prevent cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the design and methodology used can be easily transferred to the biomedical sector.

The study had the collaboration of several researchers from the Hospital Cl?nic, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), the faculties of Medicine of the universities Rovira i Virgili, Navarra, Valencia, Canary Islands and Malaga, as well as the University Hospital Son Espases of Palma, the Fats Institute in Seville, and the primary health care networks of Barcelona, Seville, Tarragona and Valencia.

It?s late February.? The Combine is unfolding.? And that means it?s time for scouts to rip or praise players under the cloak of anonymity.

Plenty of writers who publish assessments made by unnamed scouts are now ridiculed when doing so.? The pedigree and accomplishments of Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel tend to insulate him from scrutiny, even when his unnamed scouts swing and miss on players like Robert Griffin III.? (Heck, McGinn can even publish Wonderlic numbers without being vilified.)

McGinn assesses the players who could be available when the Packers use their first-round pick, and he shares the insights of a pair of unnamed scouts regarding Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner, a German-born-and-bred prospect who is now poised to fulfill the very unlikely dream of being a first-round draft pick in the NFL.

?He?s good, but I don?t see the special in him,? one unnamed scout said. ?Kind of a try-hard, good football player but nothing special.?

Said another:? ?He?s not a dynamic pass rusher but he seems to get sacks.? He comes off the ball hard but he?s not special.?

Without knowing anything about the team(s) for which these scouts work, there?s no way of knowing whether they?re badmouthing Werner in the hopes that he?ll be available when their team(s) pick.? That?s how it works.? Teams that love a player say bad things about him, wishing for a free fall.? Teams that hate a guy say great things about him, hopeful he?ll be taken early ? pushing down the board players in which the team is actually interested.

With more and more media swarming around the pre-draft process, there?s always someone ready to publish these anonymous assessments.

But citing an ?unnamed scout? tells the audience nothing about the skills or credentials of the scout.? As the late George Carlin used to say (as Carlin himself would say, he?s saying nothing now), there?s a worst doctor in the world ? and someone has an appointment with him tomorrow.? Similarly, there are plenty of scouts who aren?t as skilled as others.? Any time an unnamed scout is being quoted, there?s a chance that he?s the worst of them all.

You know, like the ones who told McGinn last year that, as to RG3, ?[e]verybody is just assuming because of the Heisman and the socks and all that bs. . . . they are ignoring a lot of bad tape that he?s had,? that ?I don?t think he has vision or pocket feel, which to me are the two most important components of quarterbacking,? that ?[h]e?s just running around winging it,? that ?[h]e?s [Michael] Vick, but not as good a thrower,? that ?he?s not as good as Cam Newton,? that ?[a]s much as is written about his athleticism, his athleticism under duress in the pocket isn?t even close to Cam Newton?s,? that ?the only way he gets big plays with his feet is if he?s got a wide-open field and the sea opens for him,? that ?[h]e?s got a little bit of a selfish streak, too,? and that ?[h]e doesn?t treat anybody good.?

Or maybe these unnamed scouts are just good enough to know how to push lies in the hopes of advancing agendas.

Academy Award winners who went on a little too long in their acceptance speeches Sunday night received an ominous warning from the orchestra at the Dolby Theater ? the theme music from "Jaws" started playing.

Lenovo outs three Android tablets, the 7-inch A1000 and A3000, and the 10-inch S6000

Mobile World Congress might be the world's premier smartphone show, but that doesn't mean you won't find a bunch of tablets on display. In fact, that's pretty much all Lenovo is showing -- that, and the K900 phone, which you've already seen. All told, the company is introducing three new tabs, all of which run Android Jelly Bean, and fall into the budget / mid-range category. At the highest end is the S6000, which really isn't "high-end," per se, given that it has a 10-inch, 1,280 x 800 IPS display and a quad-core, 1.2GHz processor (MediaTek's 8389/8125, to be exact). The tablet, which measures 8.6mm (0.34 inch) thick and weighs in at 560 grams (1.23 pounds), is rated for eight hours of battery life, and there's an optional HSPA+ radio too.

Similarly, the 7-inch A3000 (pictured above) has a 1.2GHz quad-core MTK processor, IPS display and optional HSPA+ , but its resolution is a lower 1,024 x 600. Though it's smaller, it's also a tad thicker, at 11mm (0.43 inch). Finally, at the entry level, there's the A1000, a 7-inch tablet with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and Dolby Digital Plus audio (it's being marketed toward music enthusiasts as well as first-time buyers). Both models have microSD expansion, but the A3000 supports cards up to 64GB, while the A1000 can only handle 32. (The A1000 maxes out at 16GB of built-in storage, by the way.)

The tablets will all be available sometime in Q2, with worldwide availability (yes, that includes the US). We won't find out prices until later, but we do expect to see these on display here at MWC, so stay tuned for the usual hands-on treatment.

The specs on the HTC One are impressive, except for the camera -- a 4 megapixel gamble that utilizes larger photo cells dubbed "UltraPixels." How do actual shots match up to the iPhone 5 and the Nokia Lumia 920?

The camera in the HTC One seems to perform similarly to the iPhone 5. CNET Asia?and Neowin ran the phones through their paces.

Well-lit studio shots show little difference between the two. The iPhone's colors are more saturated, while the One makes them look more natural.

In low-light conditions, the One performed better. Accrding to HTC, this is where the One should really shine. They say the "UltraPixels" capture 300 percent more light than conventional photo cells, so low-light photos should show more color and less blur.?

But outdoor shots in bright sunlight show the lower resolution of HTC One images could be an issue. In general, HTC says 4 megapixels will be plenty for mobile viewing and web images, which is how most people view photos these days anyway. But the CNET test shows some pixilation in the HTC photo, though other areas of the image appear even sharper than the iPhone version.

In mixed lighting the HTC One was slightly underexposed, but the iPhone was very overexposed.

As for the Nokia Lumia 920, its photos were also similar to the HTC One, though personal preference will probably determine which shot most people think is " better." The HTC One definitely delivered more detail in low-light and in dark areas of all images.

As with the iPhone, the One's colors are more muted and less saturated, but those colors more accurately reflect the real-life view.

Of course, as Instagram can attest, people don't always want photos that look like real life. In this instance, the One's accuracy may actually leave people a bit deflated with their snapshots. Reality is a harsh mistress.

Divided Egypt opposition attacks Mursi on election call

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's opposition attacked President Mohammed Mursi on Friday for calling elections during a national crisis, but face a test of unity in challenging Islamists who have won every poll since the 2011 revolution.

No sooner had Mursi called the parliamentary polls on Thursday than liberals and leftists accused him of deepening divisions between Islamists and their opponents. Some threatened to boycott voting which starts on April 27th and finishes in late June.

Islamists, including the Muslim Brotherhood which backs Mursi, dominated the old lower house, which was dissolved last year by court order. The new parliament will face tough decisions as Egypt is seeking an IMF loan deal which would ease its financial crisis but demand unpopular austerity.

Mursi called the elections, to be held in four stages around the country, hoping they can conclude Egypt's turbulent transition to democracy which began with the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak by popular protests.

Islamists hailed elections as the only way out of Egypt's political and economic crisis. However, liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei said holding polls without reaching a national consensus would further "inflame the situation".

"The insistence on polarisation, exclusion and oppression along with ... the deteriorating economic and security situation will lead us to the abyss," ElBaradei, a former United Nations agency chief, said on his Twitter feed.

Egypt is split between the Islamists, who want national life to observe religion more closely, and opposition groups which hold a wide variety of visions for the future.

Across Egypt there were scattered protests in Alexandria and Port Said, while a demonstration in Cairo's Tahrir Square was muted as a sandstorm enveloped the capital.

Like the fractious opposition, the demonstrators had widely varying demands. Some called on Mursi to step down while others pressed for the military, which long backed Mubarak and his predecessors, to step back in to run Egypt.

BOYCOTT DECISION

The National Salvation Front (NSF), which groups a number of parties opposed to the Islamists, said it would hammer out its stand on the elections.

"We will meet early next week to decide on whether we will boycott or go ahead with elections. But as you can see, the opposition overall is upset over this unilateral decision on part of the presidency. This was a rushed decision," Khaled Dawood, spokesman of the NSF, said.

Dawood said Egypt should have other priorities such as changing the controversial new constitution produced last year by an assembly dominated by Islamists. "Solve these issues first then talk about elections," added Dawood.

While the opposition can agree on attacking Mursi, previous boycott threats have fizzled out. It remains fractured and disorganized, unlike the well-financed and efficient Islamist election machines which have triumphed in votes for the presidency and parliament.

"We face a difficult political decision and time is running out. The opposition faces a test of its ability to remain united," said Amr Hamzawy, a professor of politics at Cairo University and former liberal lawmaker.

ISLAMISTS READY FOR VOTE

Islamist parties and groups welcomed the new elections and dismissed the boycott threat.

"Elections are the only way out of the crisis. The people must be able to choose those they see fit. The majority of political forces will not boycott the elections," said Tarek al-Zumor of the Building and Development Party.

Essam Erian, member of the Muslim Brotherhood's ruling Freedom and Justice Party, said parliament would unite Egypt's political life.

"The coming parliament will hold a variety of national voices: Islamist, conservative, liberal and leftist. Everyone realizes the importance of the coming period and withholding one's vote is a big mistake," Erian said on his Facebook page.

Islamists are likely to form coalitions and dominate the new parliament as they did the previous short-lived lower house, which was dissolved after the Constitutional Court struck down the law used to elect it.

Voting is held in stages due to a shortage of election monitors and Mursi's choice of dates upset some in the Christian minority, which makes up about 10 percent of the population.

AlKalema, a Christian Coptic group, criticized the presidency for setting the first round to fall on the community's Easter religious holiday. "This is total negligence of the Coptic community but an intentional move to exclude them from political life," AlKalema said in a statement.

Conserving corals by understanding their genes

In reef-building corals variations within genes involved in immunity and response to stress correlate to water temperature and clarity, finds a study published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Genetics. This information could be used to conserve or rebuild reefs in areas affected by climate change, by changes in extreme weather patterns, increasing sedimentation or altered land use.

A research team led by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and in collaboration with Penn State University and the Aix-Marseille University, studied DNA variations (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, SNPs) across populations of reef corals found at a range of temperatures and water clarity along the Great Barrier Reef.

SNPs which correlated to water clarity and water temperature preferred by cauliflower coral were found in genes involved in providing immune response, and regulating stress-induced cell-death. This means that coral with a specific version of these genes tended to grow at higher temperatures (or water clarity) and another variant at lower. A similar story was found for staghorn coral - SNP in genes involved in detoxification, immune response, and defense against reactive oxygen damage, were found to be associated with temperature or to water clarity.

Dr Petra Lundgren, from The Australian Institute of Marine Science, explained, "Corals are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Not only is the temperature of the water they live in affected but extreme weather and higher rainfall leads to increased levels of sediment, agricultural runoff, and fresh water on the reef. This work opens up possibilities for us to enhance reef resilience and recovery from impacts of climate change and pollution. For example, if in the future we need to restore coral populations, we can make sure that we use the most robust strains of corals to do so."

Today, Mr Gorey would have turned 88, so it is only fitting that Google celebrate him with a doodle. The Google doodle shows an illustration of Gorey with some of his most famous characters.

Gorey published his first book, "The Unstrung Harp," in 1953. He quickly shot to fame due to his characteristic ink drawings and his dark yet lighthearted stories. Categorized by the literary nonsense movement, Gorey often wrote sentences like: ?It would carry off objects of which it grew fond, And protect them by dropping them into the pond.? By the end of his life, Gorey had contributed more than 100 different works to the world. He was an accomplished writer, illustrator, and costume designer. The old man with his long white beard and soulful eyes had won over audiences and inspired artists.

The book, written in rhyming dactylic couplets, follows 26 children (one for each letter of the alphabet) as they meet their untimely, albeit cheeky, doom. The cover, Death playing babysitter to 26 children, has become one of Gorey?s most well known images.

3)??? The Haunted Tea-Cosy: A Dispirited and Distasteful Diversion for Christmas: Gorey?s brilliantly brooding take on ?A Christmas Carol.?? Follow Edward Gravel and the Bahhum Bug on their journey to "diffuse the interests of didacticism." Considered "vintage" Gorey, this is a must-read for all Gorey fans.

4)??? The Raging Tide: Or, The Black Doll's Imbroglio: Gorey?s very own pick-your-own-adventure book. Now, if you remember these from childhood (who doesn?t?), then you know you?re in for a good time. Fair warning: this book will make your head run in circles because it can be so hard to understand. But then again, that?s what it makes it classic Gorey.

5)??? The Epiplectic Bicycle: This, according to some readers, is one of Gorey?s ?lighter books.? ?Children only beat each other with croquet mallets in this one,? writes a reviewer on GoodReads. The Epiplectic Bicycle features Embley and Yewbert?s adventures on a conscious bicycle. Adventures, hilarity, and a true-to-Gorey ending ensues.

Dead in the Water

Mmm ... water. Now that's refreshing!

The body of a Canadian tourist was discovered in a water tank on top of a Los Angeles hotel on Tuesday. Local health officials have ordered people not to drink the hotel?s water (though tests indicate that the water did not contain harmful bacteria). Would drinking corpse water make you sick?

Not necessarily. If the body belonged to a generally healthy person, you might get sick from E. coli or another coliform bacteria from the deceased?s intestine. But that?s unlikely. Most bacteria don?t survive long outside of the living human body, so pathogens would probably die in the water before they could do you any harm. Bacteria also thrive only within a certain temperature range, so hot or cold weather could hamper their spread, too. (A representative of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health told NBC that a cold spell may have prevented the spread of bacteria in this particular case.) And since drinking water is treated with chlorine or other disinfectants for the express purpose of killing harmful fecal bacteria, dangerous germs have an even smaller chance of survival in a water tank than in, say, a lake.

However, coliform bacteria, which occur naturally in healthy people?s lower intestinal tract and feces, could conceivably diffuse through the water and survive long enough to make you sick. When ingested, coliform bacteria can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal symptoms, but they?re treatable with antibiotics.

If the body belonged to someone with an infectious disease, you might be in trouble. Hepatitis A, tuberculosis, cholera, and some bacteria that cause pneumonia can be spread through water, for instance. Some infectious bacteria, viruses, and parasites are chlorine-resistant, which makes them more dangerous in the water supply than coliform bacteria.

People who drink or bathe with water that?s been contaminated by a corpse are more likely to experience psychological effects than physical illness. Learning that you?ve inadvertently been in such indirect yet intimate contact with a dead body could be traumatic, and it may cause anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder, both of which are treatable with psychotherapy or antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication.

Two former Miami Hurricanes assistant football coaches not expected to receive allegation notices

As of Thursday evening, former University of Miami football assistant coaches Joe Pannunzio and Jeff Stoutland, or their legal representation had not received Notices of Allegations in the UM case involving former booster Nevin Shapiro.

They are not expected to receive NOAs.

Pannunzio is the director of football operations at the University of Alabama, where Stoutland recently left to take a job in the NFL.

?UA has not received any correspondence from the NCAA about Joe Pannunzio, Jeff Stoutland or the NOA at Miami,? Deborah Lane, Alabama assistant to the president and associate vice president for university relations, wrote in an e-mail to The Miami Herald in response to a public records request.

A source familiar with the NCAA case said neither Pannunzio nor Stoutland would be charged in any Shapiro-related allegations. However, The Associated Press on Wednesday night reported in a Twitter post that Pannunzio is in the NOA for ?text messages,? indicating it was ?minor, if anything.?

Two sources said the texting situation stems from UM formerly being investigated by the NCAA for recruiting-related text messages by coaches in various sports, first reported by The Miami Herald in August 2010.

The text-message situation, the sources said, will be included as part of the overall case. But they are expected to be alleged secondary violations listed after the Shapiro-related allegations. Pannunzio, thus, would not be subject to receiving an NOA or appearing before the infractions committee if an allegation was not major.

Also as of Thursday night, Louisville had not released former UM football assistant Clint Hurtt?s NOA but indicated in an e-mail to The Miami Herald that the related records would likely be sent later this week.

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich told reporters Thursday regarding Hurtt, that ?Clint is due his due process, and I think that?s the only fair thing we can do as a university. Clint?s side of the story is much different than the allegations, so I think we just have to wait the 90 days and see how it unfolds.?

??Senator Joseph Abruzzo wrote a letter to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi asking that she initiate an investigation into the NCAA?s actions ?during its probe of the [UM] athletic program.??

??Three former Miami assistant coaches filed a motion with the NCAA asking that their infractions cases be dismissed because of the mistakes that governing body for college athletics made in their long investigation of the Hurricanes.

Former football assistant Aubrey Hill and former basketball assistants Jake Morton and Jorge Fernandez had their motion delivered to the NCAA?s Committee on Infractions, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side authorized the release of any information.

The motion, according to the person, says the three coaches believe the NCAA?s alliance with the attorney for the former booster at the center of the Miami scandal has created a scenario where they cannot ?get a fair and reasonable proceeding.?

A conference call on the matter is scheduled for Friday with the NCAA.

Mark Woody Resigns as Head Football Coach of Carson

CHINA GROVE, NC (WBTV)- WBTV Sports has learned today that Carson Head Football Coach Mark Woody has resigned from his football duties and will now be the athletic director for the school.

Woody was the first ever coach for the school when it opened back in 2006.

In that time, he compiled a record of 28-54 in his seven seasons.??He did have back to back winning season in?2009 and 2010.

Carson is the largest high school in Rowan County, so it will be a highly sought after job as the coaching carousel continues to spin.

German Catholics allow morning-after pill in rape cases

BERLIN (Reuters) - The Roman Catholic Church in Germany said on Thursday it would permit certain types of "morning-after pill" for raped women, after two hospitals provoked an outcry for refusing to treat a rape victim.

The German Bishops' Conference said church-run hospitals would now ensure proper medical, psychological and emotional care for rape victims - including administering pills that prevent pregnancy without inducing an abortion.

Archbishop Robert Zollitsch said a four-day meeting of German bishops in the western town of Trier had "confirmed that women who have been victims of rape will get the proper human, medical, psychological and pastoral care".

"That can include medication with a 'morning-after pill' as long as this has a prophylactic and not an abortive effect," he said in a statement. "Medical and pharmaceutical methods that induce the death of an embryo may still not be used."

That means there is no change to the Catholic Church's ban on the so-called abortion pill based on the drug mifepristone or RU-486, and marketed as Mifegyne or Mifeprex.

The Church remains firmly opposed to abortion and artificial birth control, but in Germany it will now differentiate between pills that prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg in the womb and pills that induce an abortion, in cases of rape.

The German church, which has already faced mass desertions over cases of sexual abuse of children by priests, had been expected to change its position on the morning-after pill after apologizing about an incident involving two hospitals in Cologne last month.

The critical German lay movement "Wir sind Kirche" (We are the Church) said bishops took the decision because they feared losing state subsidies for church hospitals. The Catholic Church runs 25 percent of German hospitals and half of those in North Rhine-Westphalia state, which includes Cologne, it said.

Cologne's Cardinal Joachim Meisner, an ally of the outgoing German-born Pope Benedict, has already apologized for the church hospitals' treatment of the woman. He said it "shames us deeply because it contradicts our Christian mission and our purpose".

The 25-year-old woman was referred to the hospitals by her doctor for a gynecological exam after she was drugged at a party and woke up on a park bench fearing she had been raped.

The hospitals refused to treat her because they could not prescribe the pill, which is taken after sex to avoid pregnancy. She was eventually treated at a Protestant church-run hospital.

The German bishops' meeting in Trier also tried to address criticism of sexual discrimination by the Church by vowing to include more women in leadership positions, although this will not include the ordination of women as priests.

More than 181,000 German Catholics left the Church in 2010 and a further 126,000 the following year, reducing the total number to 24.47 million in a total population of 82 million.
