Toyota re-styles no-frills models to drive China fightback

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp is giving its Vios and Yaris models a major makeover for China as part of the Japanese group's make-or-break move into the no-frills entry-level segment of the world's biggest autos market.

Versions of the Vios and Yaris have done relatively well in the United States, Europe and Japan, "but we have not made sufficient progress with the car in China," Hiroji Onishi, head of Toyota's China operations, told reporters during the Shanghai auto show on Sunday.

"We tried to give (the models) a proper "daqi" stance typical of what Chinese consumers look for, and we improved fuel efficiency," he said, referring to a local phrase that Chinese use for a car's road presence.

The revamps are a key plank in Toyota's fightback strategy in a market where its sales were battered last year in the fallout from a row between Beijing and Tokyo over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

Onishi said it could take Toyota at least a year to win back business lost to that damaging territorial dispute, leveraging the new no-frills models.

The re-designs, with the new sedan version replacing the existing Vios and a hatchback replacing today's Yaris, are a recognition by Toyota that it misread the Chinese market even before last year's dispute that halved the company's sales in September. The Japanese firm will keep the existing model names for the new cars that should be in showrooms by the end of the year.

The new cars are critical to Toyota's China strategy as they are planned as high-volume models to regain momentum in the market and restore branding after the Yaris fizzled - partly through a perceived lack of 'daqi' and because it was priced too high.

The existing Vios, launched in 2002, cost from 89,500 yuan ($14,500), while the Yaris, brought to market six years later, cost from 87,000 yuan - while annual incomes for many are 50,000-60,000 yuan. Neither car really took off with a new consumer class of people who now just about earn enough to be able to afford a car.

THE ELUSIVE MILLION

A decade ago, Akio Toyoda, the founding-family scion who now heads the group, ran Toyota's China operations and set the "aspirational" goal of selling 1 million cars a year in China by 2010. It missed that goal in 2010 and again in 2011. In September last year, days before the diplomatic dispute with China, Toyota said it aimed to sell up to 1.8 million cars annually in China by 2015.

The company's 2012 China sales fell nearly 5 percent to 840,000 cars, and Masaki Taketani, Detroit-based research director at consulting firm IHS Automotive, doesn't see sales topping 1 million until at least 2015.

Much will depend on what Chinese drivers make of the Toyota models' design, style and price makeover.

"This is a live-or-die car for us," a senior China-based Toyota executive told Reuters ahead of the Shanghai show.

Crucially, General Motors' Chevrolet Sail, a China entry-level car it launched in 2010, starts at around 56,000 yuan. GM sold 218,000 Sails last year at an average of more than 18,000 a month. Sales of the Yaris averaged around 1,250 a month, while average monthly Vios sales were just 730.

Toyota China's Onishi said the remodeled no-frills cars would use more parts sourced locally in China to keep down the manufacturing cost, but it would be difficult for Toyota to bring down selling prices below 60,000 yuan. Instead, it would aim to compete in the same price range as the Nissan Motor Sunny, which starts in China at 82,800 yuan.

"That said, we're still discussing whether we could come up with a more strategic pricing," Onishi added.

IHS' Taketani said The revamp would be a test case for Toyota and other Japanese companies battling in China.

"This is a must-win car for Toyota," he said, predicting the Japanese group would do well to sell 80,000 of the new cars by 2015, well short of the 200,000 a year he believes Toyota is targeting.

Boston blasts likely to weigh on stock market

Tuesday's markets will be focused on any new information that could illuminate who was behind the attacks at the Boston Marathon.

Two explosions near the finish line killed two and injured dozens, just before the final hour of trading Monday. That drove an already weak stock market to its lows of the day and prompted a flight to safety into Treasurys, sending the 10-year yield to 1.68 percent, its lowest close of the year.

"I think that first of all, from a humanity standpoint, people are going to want to know how many people got hurt and how badly," said Ward McCarthy, chief financial economist at Jefferies. "From a big picture standpoint, people are going to want to know who did this. That is going to help answer the question of whether something like this could happen again. The question is, is this an isolated incident or the first in a campaign? You hope the situation is isolated."

Stocks were sharply lower Monday, on selling that began before the open, as gold and other commodities spiraled lower. Margin calls added to the selling pressure, as investors moved out of risk assets and into cash. The Dow ended down 1.8 percent, or 265 points to 14,559, and the S&P 500 was down 2.3 percent to 1552. Gold plunged 9.3 percent to $1361.10, its biggest one day drop since 1980. Silver lost 13 percent, and WTI crude fell 4.4 percent.

In the final hour, investors rushed the S&P 500 options pit. The VIX spiked, ending the day 43 percent higher at 17.27.

"Guys came in and started buying May and April out-of-the-money puts. We saw a lot of customers right when the initial news was coming out. People were coming in and buying puts purely for a directional trade," said Patrick Kernan of Cardinal Capital. "It wasn't just like one customer was doing it. It was across the board. We think it was a knee-jerk reaction to the bombings."

"The volatility was going up in gaps, which equates to a lot of uncertainty," he said. Kernan said if there are no other events, the market could calm down Tuesday. S&P 500 futures were slightly higher in the electronic evening session.

Monday's selloff, even before the late day downdraft, had traders already questioning whether the long-awaited stock market pullback had begun.

"It certainly has the elements of the correction we've been waiting for. Single catalysts haven't been enough to slow this market down?Now you sort of string things together, with the China demand story, earnings season and two weeks of somewhat weaker economic data. That does set the table for it," said Art Hogan of Lazard Capital Markets. Commodities, already moving lower last week, were hit hard by China's report early Monday that first quarter GDP growth was 7.7 percent, less than the 8 percent expected.

Carter Worth, chief technician at Oppenheimer Asset Management, says the stock-market selloff is overdue, but it was unclear if this is the beginning of a bigger selloff. The S&P is up 8.9 percent year-to-date.

"The worst part is people are really invested now. The retail investor has been pouring in money in since January," said Worth. He said there's a warning in how the markets have been trading, prior to Monday's decline. "It's copper. It's oil. It's gold. It's the Bovespa. The Kospi in Korea. Everything is getting pounded, and the S&P goes higher every day. It's absurd and everyone knows it. It's like a game of chicken. The fear of missing out is a powerful thing."

Worth said the market has become bifurcated, and unlike the past three years where there were spring swoons, the safety stocks are now expensive. Home builders, which helped lead the market higher, were down sharply Monday, with the SPDR S&P Home Builders ETF XHB down five percent.

"The classic place to rotate is into staples or health care. When you do get nervous about asset-class equities, you rotate into safety," he said. "For the first time in three years, the safety names are already full.This time it ended with nowhere to move."

What to watch
Tuesday has plenty of earnings news for investors to consider. Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Coca-Cola, Johnson and Johnson, Northern Trust, US Bancorp and TD Ameritrade report before the opening bell. Intel,Yahoo and CSX report after the close Tuesday.

There is also CPI and housing starts, both at 8:30 a.m. and industrial production at 9:15 a.m.

"One of the mainstays of this economy has been the housing market," said McCarthy. "If we were to get a big disappointment in housing starts that would continue to keep this (Treasury) market going. Some of the numbers we've seen over the last few days probably are reducing the market anxiety about the Fed tapering."

Several Fed speakers are out on Tuesday and their remarks will be watched closely for any comments on when the Fed could "taper" its $85 billion monthly asset purchases. New York Fed President William Dudley speaks at 8 a.m. ET on the economy, and Chicago Fed President Charles Evan speaks at 9 a.m. on what lies ahead.

Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota speaks at 4 p.m. on improving the outlook, and Fed Gov. Elizabeth Duke speaks to an American Bankers Association conference at 12 p.m.

Activists say Syrian airstrike kills 12 civilians

BEIRUT (AP) ? A Syrian government airstrike on a town in the country's northwest killed at least 12 people Saturday, shattering store fronts, setting cars ablaze and sending a giant plume of black and gray smoke over the horizon.

President Bashar Assad's air force has been one of his biggest assets in the 2-year-old civil war and he has used warplanes and helicopters to try to check rebel advances, although the regime also frequently hits civilian areas.

A Human Rights Watch report this week accused the Syrian government of committing war crimes by using indiscriminate and sometimes deliberate airstrikes against civilians, killing at least 4,300 people since the summer.

Saturday's air raid struck the town of Saraqeb in Idlib province, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group. The Observatory said four of the 12 people killed in the attack were members of the same family. Many others were wounded and the death toll was expected to rise, the Observatory said.

Amateur videos posted online showed a giant plume of black smoke, and people in cars and on motorbikes rushing to help the wounded. A group of men can be seen carrying a wounded man covered in gray dust. Another man in the video rushes with a bucket of water to help extinguish cars in flames. Rubble and twisted metal littered the street.

The video appeared genuine and corresponded to other reporting by The Associated Press of the events depicted.

Rebels have wrested much of the countryside of Idlib and other provinces in northern Syria from regime forces, although government troops still control many military bases in the region from which they launch attacks ? including airstrikes ? on opposition-held areas.

South of Saraqeb, Syrian government troops trying to relieve a besieged military base ambushed a rebel checkpoint, killing at least 12 opposition fighters.

The Observatory said the government forces surprised the rebel fighters on the outskirts of the village of Baboulein. The Observatory, which relies on a network of local activists on the ground, said many opposition fighters were also wounded in the attack.

Observatory director Rami Abdul-Rahman said the assault was part of government efforts to resupply the embattled military base at Wadi Deif outside of the town of Maaret al-Numan, which is just north of Baboulein on the Damascus-Aleppo highway.

Rebels have been trying for months to capture the large base at Wadi Deif, from which regime troops regularly pound the now largely abandoned town of Maaret al-Numan with artillery fire. The regime must push convoys through rebel-held territory to prevent the base from running short of troops and supplies.

On Thursday, activists said rebels shot down a helicopter carrying food and supplies to the base, killing the pilot and three other soldiers.

In the northern city of Aleppo, a government air raid on the disputed Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood killed at least three people and wound 16 others, the Observatory said. It added that doctors treating the wounded said many showed symptoms of inhaling toxic gas, such as severe vomiting and irritation to the nose and eyes.

Both sides in the Syrian civil war have accused the other of using chemical weapons.

Syria has asked the U.N. to investigate an alleged chemical weapons attack by rebels in March on the village of Khan al-Assal outside of Aleppo. The rebels blame regime forces.

Britain and France want the U.N. to investigate allegations of chemical weapons use in Khan al-Assal and another village, Ataybah, on March 19, as well as the central city of Homs on Dec. 23.

Syria has rejected U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's push to expand the U.N. probe to include those other villages.

The Syrian conflict began in March 2011 with largely peaceful protests but has since devolved into a civil war that the United Nations says has killed at least 70,000 people. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have sought refuge abroad, and millions inside the country have fled their homes to try to find safety elsewhere inside Syria.

International efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict have faltered.

U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is scheduled to address the U.N. Security Council on Thursday. Brahimi has not been able to make progress in his mission to push forward a peace plan for Syria first presented in June at an international conference in Geneva.

On Saturday, Syrian state-run daily Al-Thawra accused Brahimi of being a "false witness." The daily said he had taken sides in the conflict and that his briefing "will not alleviate the suffering of Syrians."

Brahimi angered the Syrian government in December by saying that the four-decade rule of the Assad family had gone on "too long."

In Rome, the Italian Foreign Ministry said that four Italian journalists who had been detained in Syria since April 4 have been freed. The ministry did not specify who had detained them, or disclose details of their release.

Italian media have reported that the four were a RAI public television reporter and three freelancers who had entered Syria earlier this month with the intention of working by day in Syria and crossing into Turkey in the evening. They were reportedly detained in a rebel-controlled area in northern Syria near the Turkish border.

Bed bugs are notoriously tough to exterminate?many populations have already evolved resistance to common insecticides. But they do have a non-chemical enemy: kidney bean leaves.

The leaves' microscopic hairs pierce the bugs' feet, trapping them after just a few six-legged steps. It's a traditional anti-bed bug measure in the Balkans [See Michael F. Potter, The History of Bed Bug Management, in American Entomologist]. And tests have shown the leaves to be remarkably effective, but only when freshly picked?meaning it's not the most practical tactic for city dwellers.

So researchers tried a synthetic alternative. They created molds of the leaves, and cast 158 replicas using various plant-like polymers. The synthetic leaf surfaces looked identical to the real leaves, each sporting tens of thousands of sharp, hooked hairs. But they didn't impale or trap bed bugs in the lab?they just snagged them momentarily, delaying their march toward blood. Those results appear in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. [Megan W. The researchers are still hunting for the bean leaves' secret. If they discover it, they say it could be a nifty way to treat infestations without pesticides. As long as the thought of all those bloodsuckers trapped and squirming under your bed won't bug you all night.

Advancing secure communications: A better single-photon emitter for quantum cryptography

In a development that could make the advanced form of secure communications known as quantum cryptography more practical, University of Michigan researchers have demonstrated a simpler, more efficient single-photon emitter that can be made using traditional semiconductor processing techniques.

Single-photon emitters release one particle of light, or photon, at a time, as opposed to devices like lasers that release a stream of them. Single-photon emitters are essential for quantum cryptography, which keeps secrets safe by taking advantage of the so-called observer effect: The very act of an eavesdropper listening in jumbles the message. This is because in the quantum realm, observing a system always changes it.

For quantum cryptography to work, it's necessary to encode the message -- which could be a bank password or a piece of military intelligence, for example -- just one photon at a time. That way, the sender and the recipient will know whether anyone has tampered with the message.

While the U-M researchers didn't make the first single-photon emitter, they say their new device improves upon the current technology and is much easier to make.

"This thing is very, very simple. It is all based on silicon," said Pallab Bhattacharya, the Charles M. Vest Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the James R. Mellor Professor of Engineering.

Bhattacharya, who leads this project, is a co-author of a paper on the work published in Nature Communications on April 9.

Bhattacharya's emitter is a single nanowire made of gallium nitride with a very small region of indium gallium nitride that behaves as a quantum dot. A quantum dot is a nanostructure that can generate a bit of information. In the binary code of conventional computers, a bit is a 0 or a 1. A quantum bit can be either or both at the same time.

The semiconducting materials the new emitter is made of are commonly used in LEDs and solar cells. The researchers grew the nanowires on a wafer of silicon. Because their technique is silicon-based, the infrastructure to manufacture the emitters on a larger scale already exists. Silicon is the basis of modern electronics.

"This is a big step in that it produces the pathway to realizing a practical electrically injected single-photon emitter," Bhattacharya said.

Key enablers of the new technology are size and compactness.

"By making the diameter of the nanowire very small and by altering the composition over a very small section of it, a quantum dot is realized," Bhattacharya said. "The quantum dot emits single-photons upon electrical excitation."

The U-M emitter is fueled by electricity, rather than light -- another aspect that makes it more practical. And each photon it emits possesses the same degree of linear polarization. Polarization refers to the orientation of the electric field of a beam of light. Most other single-photon emitters release light particles with a random polarization.

"So half might have one polarization and the other half might have the other," Bhattacharya said. "So in cryptic message, if you want to code them, you would only be able to use 50 percent of the photons. With our device, you could use almost all of them."

This device operates at cold temperatures, but the researchers are working on one that operates closer to room temperature.

The paper is titled "Electrically-driven polarized single-photon emission from an InGaN quantum dot in a GaN nanowire." The first author is Saniya Deshpande, a graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science. The work is supported by the National Science Foundation. The device was fabricated at the U-M Lurie Nanofabrication Facility.

Taliban attack Afghan governor's compound

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A huge explosion tore through a governor's compound, followed by a gunbattle with Taliban gunmen Wednesday in western Afghanistan, officials said.

The attack occurred in the capital of Farah province, which is in a volatile area near the Iranian border.

Intensive gunfire lasted about 20 minutes after the explosion, said Nazir Khan Khedmat, a provincial council member who was inside the building when the attack began.

Deputy provincial governor Yonus Rasouli said the explosion damaged many government buildings in the area. He said there were casualties among civilians and security forces, but he had no reports of officials killed or wounded.

Security forces were still battling attackers holed up in a nearby building, he said.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message.

In other violence, Taliban gunmen attacked a local police patrol late Tuesday in the southeastern Paktika province and six insurgents were killed in the fighting, according to a statement from the governor's office. A roadside bomb then struck a police vehicle as it was leaving the area, killing four patrollers, it said.

Now that the Raiders have reeled in Matt Flynn and soon will unload Carson Palmer, the question becomes where will Palmer go?

Saudi Arabia may try to end anonymity for Twitter users in the country by limiting access to the site to people who register their identification documents, the Arab News daily reported on Saturday.

Last week, local media reported the government had asked telecom companies to look at ways they could monitor, or block, free internet phone services such as Skype.

Twitter is highly popular with Saudis and has stirred broad debate on subjects ranging from religion to politics in a country where such public discussion had been considered at best unseemly and sometimes illegal.

Early this month, the security spokesman for Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry described social networking, particularly Twitter, as a tool used by militants to stir social unrest.

The country's Grand Mufti, Saudi Arabia's top cleric, last week described users of the microblogging site as "clowns" wasting time with frivolous and even harmful discussions, local newspapers reported.

"A source at (the regulator) described the move as a natural result of the successful implementation of (its) decision to add a user's identification numbers while topping up mobile phone credit," Arab News reported.

That would not necessarily make a user's identity visible to other users of the site, but it would mean the Saudi government could monitor the tweets of individual Saudis.

The English-language daily and sister paper to the Saudi-owned pan-Arab Asharq al-Awsat newspaper did not explain how the authorities might be able to restrict ability to post on Twitter. Both newspapers belong to a publishing group owned by the ruling family and run by a son of Crown Prince Salman.

Internet service providers are legally obliged to block websites showing content deemed pornographic.

One of the big investors in Twitter is Saudi Arabian billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a nephew of King Abdullah who also holds significant stakes in Citi Group, News Corp and Apple through his Kingdom Holding Company.

The country's telecom regulator, Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) did not immediately responded to requests for comment on the report. Last week it did not comment on the report it was seeking to restrict Skype use.

A spokeswoman for Kingdom Holding said Prince Alwaleed was not available to comment.

"There are people who misuse the social networking and try to send false information and false evaluation of the situation in the kingdom and the way the policemen in the kingdom are dealing with these situations," said Major General Mansour Turki, the security spokesman, at a news conference on Mar 8.

At a separate interview with Reuters this month, Turki argued that a small number of supporters of al Qaeda and activists from Saudi Arabia's Shi'ite minority used social media to stir wider sympathy for their goals and social unrest.

However, he also argued against banning the site.

Two weeks ago one of Saudi Arabia's most prominent clerics, Salman al-Awdah, who has 2.4 million followers on the site, used Twitter to attack the government's security policy as too harsh and call for better services. He warned it might otherwise face "the spark of violence".

Two leading Saudi human rights activists were sentenced to long prison terms this month for a variety of offences including "internet crimes" because they had used Twitter and other sites to attack the government.

Some top princes in the monarchy now use Twitter themselves and Crown Prince Salman, King Abdullah's designated heir and also Defence Minister, recently opened an official account.
